York Academy Scholarship+

The York Academy Regional Charter School evolved from the efforts of YorkCounts, a community-wide initiative which began in York County in 1996. YorkCounts charged the community to develop an alternate educational opportunity that could help keep young middle-class families in the city and also provide a first-rate education to students whose families lack the financial means to move out of the city. York Academy was designed to provide academic programming that would enrich a large number of city students and honor one of David Rusk’s recommendations by establishing a charter school combining York City and York County students.

With the opening of the Upper School in 2018 and the first graduating class on the horizon in 2022, the York Academy Foundation began considering ways to expand opportunities for students into high education through a scholarship program. In reviewing literature on the barriers to college, the Foundation Trustees came to realize that many York Academy students and families need "a bridge" to college as much (or more) than a one-time scholarship check. To meet this need, the Foundation developed Scholarship+ with a goal to empower and prepare all York Academy students to attend and graduate from college.

As an enrichment, college-access program, Scholarship+ is designed to eliminates barriers and build systems to ensure that York Academy students and families have the information, tools and support needed to access higher education. All York Academy students begin participating in Scholarship+ during seventh grade and continue through graduation. Visit The Program page to learn more about the student experiences during each grade level. If you are interested in learning more about the ideas behind Scholarship+, check out The Plus.
