Modern Music Program

York Academy's Modern Music Program is a state-of-the-art, multifaceted approach to music education. It is designed to build musical fluency and skills directly related to current jobs in the music industry.  

PYP - 4th - 6th Grade 

4th Grade - Every student in 4th grade receives instrument lessons on piano, drum set, guitar, and bass guitar. The school year is spent learning the basics of these instruments, as well as learning the theory of blues and pop songs.  

5th & 6th Grade- Every student in 5th grade chooses one of the four instruments to study for the entire year. Students' 5th grade year is spent building skills on a specific instrument leading to performance, composition, and improvisation. It continues into their 6th grade year.

MYP - 7th & 8th Grade

Music Tech Class - Each student in 7th & 8th grade has Music Tech Class for one semester/term.  They learn to produce and compose music using  using Garageband on their Chromebooks. Students also learn about the science of audio and sound waves. 

Music Lab - Music Lab is optional for 7th and 8th graders. It is a continuation of their instrumental instruction from 4th, 5th and 6th grade. Students continue to build skills on their instruments, compose, improvise, perform, and record.
