Students Attend Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire
Ben Witmer

On Wednesday, October 11, 2017, thirty-four 6th, 7th, and 8th grade York Academy students participated in Student Days at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire in Manheim, Pennsylvania. While at the Faire, students encountered costumed characters, witnessed handcrafted demonstrations, enjoyed period foods, played games, and watched live shows, including the infamous human chess match. They also participated in three competitions throughout the day. A small group of students competed in the Heraldry Competition by creating a 3 by 4 foot Coat of Arms that represented York Academy. Additionally, a group of three 8th grade students sang the traditional English folk song, “Greensleeves” in a Renaissance Music Competition and earned the first place ribbon. Their success was matched by a group of eighteen students from varying grades who entered the Theater Competition. They performed a scene from Shakespeare’s Richard III and placed first as well. Beyond their success in the various competitions, we can confidently say that each and every students had a meaningful and memorable day at the Faire, and we look forward to doing it again next year.
