The boys’ and girls’ fifth- and sixth-grade basketball teams are new for 2016. Sixth-grade teacher Mr. Shuey is the girls’ head coach and fifth-grade teacher Mr. Bricker is the boys’ head coach, each acting as the other’s assistant coach. Mr. Shuey has prior experience coaching middle school basketball and, while Mr. Bricker is new to the head coach role, he was an assistant coach to his younger siblings and played basketball himself in high school and college. The teams teach more than just basketball skills, however; the players set personal and team goals, and have discussed the importance of the word “student” in the term “student athlete.” Ultimately, the coaches hope to see their players grow not only in the sport, but also in teamwork and camaraderie.
This year the two York Academy basketball teams will not be in any specific league, though the coaches have plans to scrimmage other recreational league teams from the surrounding school districts.
The fifth- and sixth-grade boys’ team has practice Monday and Wednesday from 4:30-6:00pm and the fifth- and sixth-grade girls’ team practices Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:oopm.
